"Human beings are members of a whole, In creation of one essence and soul, If one member is afflicted with pain, Other members uneasy will remain. If you have no sympathy for human pain, The name of human you cannot retain." Saadi, born in Shiraz, 12th century
This human rights manifesto is addressed to Iran and those in the international community who believe in radical improvement for our human rights record and those who have the power to bring about such improvement. The Shiraz Assosciation for the Protection of Human Rights has been formed because we believe the right to a life without torture, rape, beatings, executions, repression, inequality and mass arrests for simply speaking our minds is fundamental to any human existence and that no human should have to suffer needlessly. These Human Rights abuses are not consistent with Persian heritage or with the Islamic Republic of Iran's principles. We feel that the Islamic Republic of Iran had been corrupted and as a result we ourselves are losing pride in our own country and we have become a country of shame in the eyes of foreigners.
Our objectives are: To enforce our government's compliance with all its documented national and international commitments to safeguard human rights To gain respect for the rights of all people in Iran no matter what their politivcal or religious beliefs To obtain freedom from torture and ill-treatment To obtain freedom of expression
We believe these objectives can be achieved if our messages about human rights abuses in Iran reach the right people. Our first campaign will be to attempt to send a loud message to the Itanian government by lobbying to prevent Iran from gaining a seat on the UN Human Rights Council. The vote takes place on May 13 and we believe it is imperative that Iran should not be elected to this council as long as our government continues to trample on the human rights of its citizens.

Open Letter to the Head of the Human Rights Council of the Islamic Republic
Dear Mohammad Javad Larijani,
We, the Shiraz Association for the Protection of Human Rights, are adamant that to make changes to human rights in Iran the most imperative and primary action to take is to prevent Iran from gaining a seat on the UN Human rights council for which they are making a bid in May 2010.
As leaders of the Human Rights in Iran, we call upon you to withdraw your bid to gain a seat at the council for the following reasons:
- Our government has accumulated an atrocious record of human rights for which they refuse to acknowledge. In February they submitted to the UPR a beautiful picture of their noble human rights. It would be a detrimental blow to those who have challenged the state in recent months, and have had to endure mass arrests, hangings and beatings, if Iran were to be accepted on to the UNHRC.
- If Iran gained a seat on the UNHRC it would make our government feel as if they had a respected place in the international community and could do what they wished. Human rights abuses may ironically become worse after they join the council. In contrast if they do not gain a seat this may send them a powerful message of just how isolated Iran has become because of the atrocious acts it is carrying out.
- Whilst Iran is not adhering to the international principles on human rights and rejecting recommendations laid out by the UPR, a bid for a seat on the UNHRC is counterintuitive and what Iran seeks to gain in global political freedoms by making this manoeuvre, at the same time reduces its political standing at home, when every person living in Iran can see the human rights abuses carried out in front of their own eyes.
- We, the people of Iran, need to be confident that our government is going to make amends and is going to make changes to its human rights record. The knowledge that Iran is making a bid for the UNHRC sends the message that our government is not going to make any reforms and that they can persist with their actions.
